· Metaphor--comparison of two things (without using the words "like" or "as")
· Simile (like a metaphor but using the words "like" or "as")
· Personal commentary on thoughts and reactions
· Relate to reader by referring to things that are familiar
· Specific examples, including personal examples
· Introducing main idea by clearly stating it and then elaborating
· Indicating extent of phenomenon/idea by referring to widespread references (and using foreign terms when appropriate)
· Supporting main idea with scientific evidence
· Using documented evidence (like media/news sources)
· Using facts/statistics
· Anticipating reader’s reactions and responding to them
