Announcements

No blog response during spring break.

Just make sure you're caught up on your readings (it'd be a great idea to finish TIB before you return from break).

Also, continue thinking about your two Paper #3 topics.

Have a good spring break!

For your new blog post, pick an essay from your new reading passages in TIB. Explain what your personal response is to the essay and explain what makes the essay effective.

Reminders:
--> Don't forget that there will not be English class on Tuesday because I will be at a conference. Sarah will be holding walk-in hours at the Tutoring Center 10:30-12:30 that morning in case you want to run your paper revision by her.
--> Remember to have your final drafts of Paper #2--with your original graded essay attached--ready to turn in on Thursday. Before you come to class, make sure everything you changed has been highlighted on your final draft.

--> Also, don't forget that your ESP Check-in #3 is due in English class on Thursday, 3/25. Here are the guidelines:
ESP Check-in #3
1. How will math affect you later in life? In your household? Interacting with others? At work?
2. Same question about English.
3. You have about 7 weeks left to get the most out of these two classes. What changes can you make to do so? Be as specific as possible. Keep in mind that even if you have been keeping up with all the work, there is always more that you can do to maximize what you get out of the next several weeks. For example, if you haven't been using the Writing Center, you can make an appointment and see them with your Paper #2 revision assignment. Also, only mention changes that you are willing to make.
Due: At our next class meeting
Length: AT LEAST 1 full page, typed, double-spaced

For your new blog response, complete the latest TIB readings and then answer ALL 3 of the following questions here:

1) In "Peace Begins with One Person," the author talks about a time she buys breakfast for a customer at the diner where she works. She then discusses what happens after that event. Have you ever seen/committed a similar random act of kindness and been surprised by the results?

2) In his essay "Do What You Love," pro skateboarder Tony Hawk says "You might not make it to the top, but if you are doing what you love, there is much more happiness there than being rich or famous." Although you don't have to decide on a career yet, you're probably already thinking and wondering about what you would like to do after you finish college. At this point, do you agree or disagree with Hawk's statement?

3) In "Combating the Tyranny of the Positive Attitude," Barbara Held makes the surprising argument that being positive is *not* always the best thing. After reading through her reasons, do you agree/disagree with her argument?

Length: 1 paragraph per question
Due: Before our next regular class meeting

Reminders:--> If you haven't already, please do sign up for your conference with me. Don't be late--your conference will count as your class attendance for Thursday (since we are *not* having regular class on 3/11).
--> Sarah is having walk-in hours in the Tutoring Center on Thursday from 12-2. This is a great chance to get further feedback as you think about how to revise Paper #2.
--> Don't worry about the HW assignment on the calendar that says This I Believe reflection. By answering the above questions, you are reflecting on your reading.

Don't forget to sign up for your Paper #2 Revision Conference.
See previous blog post to sign up. Again, this will count as your class attendance for Thu, 3/11 and we will *not* have regular class that day. Instead, you will show up to your conference with me, I will give you feedback for revising your in-class essay, I will give you instructions for the major revision assignment, and we can talk about your performance in the class. Appointments are 15 minutes long; do not be late because there will be someone scheduled right behind you.

Blog response:
What is one specific thing that you can do differently to improve how you're doing in this class? (Note: Please no vague answers like "do more of my work." If you have not been completing all your work, what is one SPECIFIC thing you should do differently to make sure that you will start getting it all done on time? If you've been keeping up with everything, perhaps there are additional things that can ensure that you do even better. For instance, have you stopped by the Writing Center at all?)
Due: before our next class
Length: one paragraph

Hint:
Expect a quiz next time! Anything we've covered is fair game: Practical Guide reading, This I Believe, grammar.

3) At the end of your blog response, please answer the following question: "What specific things were challenging/okay about writing the in-class essay?"
